Pup-session

I've become recently obsessed with finding a puppy. But what to get? I believe strongly in being a responsible pet owner. So the first challenge is finding a pet that suits your lifestyle. I know Hub and I like to spend evenings on the couch, snuggled in with my knitting. When he has a weekend off, we like to go to festivals, parks, fairs, etc. Although we don't go play outside all that often, we live in a dog friendly condo and have lots of good neighborhood walking areas. There are several dog-friendly parks within a short (5 minute or less) drive. Even though we intend to spend more time out of doors, that very rare outside day isn't enough for an active dog. We both can't stand yappy lap dogs and since we want to have children (someday, people, some day) the dog can't be agressive. And don't forget our kittens; they need a friend, not foe, as they're high-strung enough as it is.
So, what's a good pet owner to do? Research!
This just happens to be my favorite part of any purchase, the anticipation and education. (yes, I know I'm a geek). I thought I'd share what I'd learned with ya'll, lest you find yourself in the same search.

This site has all kinds of good info on it. They have several lists to choose from, to find a pet that suits your situation and temperment. This one cross referenced with this one and this one, helped me tremendously. I also considered the ease of care and personality quirks.
So which made the list?
Australian Bull Dog
Bull Dog (English)
Basset Hound (Hub's dream dog, since it's the mascot for UT)
Pug

I don't have my heart set on any one of the options because I want to get a rescued pup, for a few reasons:

  1. we don't have a lot of extra money to spend
  2. There are too many dogs that need homes to justify spending money on a breeded dog
  3. My kittens are rescued and they are fantastic pets, very appreciative!
  4. It's the right thing to do!

To find a rescue pet, the best source I've found is Petfinder. You can search by breed, age, gender and location.

It'll be a while before we can get a puppy (I need a permanent job and a realistic, working budget), but it never hurts to look (especially when bored at work!)

I know what you mean, Mike and I would loooove to have a dog. But having 3 kids (the 4 on the way) having a dog would make life just a little too crazy!
