Reason #499 to work at a yarn shop

You certainly might get sweaty helping the yarn store move (no AC!)...but you will be rewarded:

This, my friends, is free yarn-FREE! Here's how I plan on using it:This isn't actually mine...but yarn I'll be dyeing for the LYS

All the Alpaca she had!
Enough brown for something for someone who likes brown (jamie? that would be you!) some pinky red that will make a nice hat/scarf set
500 yds Montera (llama/wool blend) and 2 skeins Inca Alpaca...they go together, don't you think? Maybe a cardigan? This will all be dyed, because I don't care for the colors..for me...or others...

This! This is Noro Cash Iroha! The fantastic cashmerey-ness negates the rather icky color...overdye, perhaps?

Angora-Angora!

The motherload! These balls are GINORMOUS! I included the Noro for scale (it's a 150ish yard ball about the same weight...and these balls DWARF it!)
I believe this is a mohair/wool blend...clearly handpainted-My mom will love it-enough for a sweater-yay!

And now, because you've stuck around so long...a suprise!
My birthday is this Saturday, and in the grand tradition of knitbloggers everwhere-I want YOU to celebrate and I want to send you some yarn!
Here's how to enter the drawing:
In the spirit of the generosity of my LYS owner, leave me a comment (or email me) telling me about your favorite yarn shop: where it is and why you love it.
I'm leaving Thursday for a looong roadtrip to southern FL, so extra points if you tell me about yarn stores in my path! Extra points if you suggest patterns for this yarn!
Everyone who comments will be entered in a random drawing (twice if you get the 'extra points'!) and I'll announce the winners next week, whenever I get internet access during my trip.
The Prize: some of the above yarn (only what's whole and labeled...unless you really want some of the mystery yarn), some handpainted yarn, and some finds from my b-day trip!

I hate to say it but we have such a lousy selection here that my favorite LYS is KnitPicks. Sad. The closest two shops don't even carry sock yarn - can you imagine?

I actually have 2 stores that I love. The first is my LYS. I love that they are intimate and cozy and, um, cluttered. They have a great selection and an incredibly knowledgable staff.

My second favorite store is located on the backside of nowhere. She only accepts cash and calling the store cluttered would be to kind. She has everything from a kajillion kinds of acrylic to bamboo to Rio de la Plata to Cascade to Treking and on and on. This would easily be my favorite store except for the fact it is 4 hours from where I live.

As for patterns, I would think that the handpaint would make a BEAUTIFUl Clapotis. What a lovely haul you have.

I like two stores in my area, but I'll tell you about my favorite one. The one I absolutely love is very small, but the owner is such a sweetheart who is very helpful and friendly, and the prices are incredible. Also, since it is a small store, you go in there and are just overwhelmed by all the yarn. It's like I have a friend with a crazy yarn stash, that I can just pet and stare at all day.

I have an idea for the angora... What about those adorable little knitted gathered pouches in Last Minute Knitted gifts?

My favorite LYS is the one that's actually the most local to me-- Article Pract in Oakland, CA. They always have a nice wall of koigu and lorna's laces sock yarns, as well as almost every needle I could ever hope to find. Top it off with nice staff who are always attentive and patient with the lamest of requests (mine included), and a "bring your babies to knit" early morning snb for new mothers (I haven't been, but think its pretty rad they hold it!) and they're my favorite place to visit.

The noro may make up into some nice pulse-wristwarmers, for when the weather turns cool again, and the yarn to dye-- for a felted fair isle bag :)

Have a great trip :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Aren't you a sweetie giving away all that yarn! Your going to have to count me out of your draw, Can't touch alpaca, llama or angora : ( Makes my hands go numb and blotchy! I'm sorry I can't think of any stores on your way! Hope you have a safe and fun trip!

My fav. yarn store has to be birds of a feather out in Avon, Ohio. It’s a hike for me to get there but the people who work there are always so nice and helpful… plus their selection is great, well organized, and well labeled (is there anything more frustrating than yarn that has no price on it?). The store is HUUUGE. It’s in a converted barn – the first floor is all quilting stuff and the second floor is all yarn.

Have fun on your trip!!!
