I kinda skipped out on Stash Your Flash day and didn't really go through everything the way I needed to. So today, I pulled it all out and put all the crappy acrylic and leftovers (except for the blues and my handpainted) in a big ole box bound for a knitwear design student (her final project will be made from donated and recycled yarn with a blurb about everyone involved-cool, eh?). The rest got organized into Sell, I have no idea what I'm doing with it but I can't part with it, and Destined to be ____. The stuff I'm selling is on the Destash Blog, go have a look-see, I'll wait.
Ok, that's all the domestisity I can handle, on to my all-encompassing study of color and dyeing.
The book for today:
Dyeing and Spinning in the Natural Way by Ruth A Castino.
I can't find a picture anywhere, because this book is old. The pictures are so 70s! However, if you can get past the very hippie kids in all the pictures (they shear, they dye, they spin, they're 10!), the book is super informative in a very conversational way.
The book starts with the different kinds of fibers, how they're harvested and moves to natural dyes (marigolds, goldenrod, black-eyed susans!) and how to harvest them and extract the dye. The last section goes over spinning and covers it thoroughly, how to make a spindle, the history of wheels, how to use one, and on and on.
If you want a good overview of the whole process, this book is great, if a bit old!
