On Tuesday night, I had my first class in 3 years. I have a BA in French from a charming, enveloping Christian college. This class was a state school. A business class. Quite jarring. Halfway through, however, my heart swelled at the site of the syllabus, the desks, the whiteboard. I'm back, baby! Right where I belong, in a desk, soaking it all in.
On Wednesday morning, when I arrived at work, everything was dark. No Internet, no power, no boss. When she arrived, the VP of the College of Med decided we had the day off, with pay (yay!). I spent the morning at the Farmer's Market (blackberries!), the thrift store
Today, right after I brewed my first cup of coffee, listening to a new CD, the power went off. Seems something on our block is down and we were without power, at home, all day.
No phone, no Internet, no TV, no microwave.
I ate tomatoes that I grew with the cucumbers from yesterday's Farmer's Market with a splash of vinegar. Still starving, I polished off the blueberries with a dollop of yogurt.
Thrilled, at first, to be eating so fresh, it soon occured to me that all that was left to eat was cheese, chips and salsa.
Luckily I just bought a bag of charcoal, so we had a frozen pizza, cooked on the grill. It tasted exclusively of charcoal, which still lingers in my mouth. I spent the day cleaning, reading and napping.
The silence was amazing and calming. This evening, sitting in the computer lab at school (after my second class), I'm a bit annoyed at the kid next to me who won't stop giggling but I feel rested and renewed and...aligned, for the first time since moving....

(That's me under the blanket and animals)

Congrats on your alignment. I've been envying you since yesterday, when I learned that your building is out the rest of the week. If you're up for some insanity, you know where to find us.
Now, for the coffee. While it won't typically rival your favorite coffee shop, it is suitable, and a step above stale Folgers (what you'll find in my neck of the brick jungle). Here's the easiest way to tell you, and you can adjust it to suit your needs (as there are alternate ways to arrive at the same place).
Go into the Culp. Get on the ramp and go down until you can't go down any more. Ahead, to your left, is a ramp that goes back up a bit, to the "Cave". Enter the Cave, and ahead to your left there is a little doorway and if you can't smell your way, you should be able to make out a sign that says "Java City" before you get all the way there. Order at your own risk, they have new staff (a shame, because I LOVED the women who worked there daytime, last year, when it was upstairs next to the Atrium/Food Court). Feel free to map out your own route, now that you know how to locate it.
cute dog!
