"When you set out on annual family trip, naturally you have to take your knitting; something has to keep you sane in the possibly quite ferocious situation you will be up against in the next two weeks"
-Elizabeth Zimmerman, Knitter's Almanac
For trip knitting I wanted to work on one major project. It would serve as entertainment and a(later) as a souvenir of my trip. I wanted to see what I couldn knit on one trip, almost 2 weeks...with a total of 4 days of driving! I took Elizabeth Zimmerman's advice; her Pi Shawl seemed like a good match: easy to carry, can be difficult or simple, lightweight in my lap as I sit on the beach.
I didn't want to buy all new yarn for this and I had some Alpaca Cloud in my stash. It wasn't enough, so I ordered more, 4 days before I left in hopes it would arrive before our departure (I've gotten things from KnitPicks in 2 days before!). It didn't.
I was seriously dissapointed but couldn't give up on my plan so I took the alpaca and planned on buying more laceweight on my trip.
We departed Thursday and I cast on for the shawl as we entered Kentucky. The shawl begins with 9 sts on dpns and quickly increases (something about PI and doubling the circumferance while doubling the radius...it makes sense, but my mathmatical skills are lacking). The shawl quickly moved onto a circular needle, in time to sit in some traffic.
It moved into Tennessee (this is the blue Tennessee sign, you'll just have to trust the shawl)
I drove through Tennessee and into Macon, GA before we stopped to sleep. The shawl enjoyed the ride but didn't get picked up (my Hub is anti-driving-while-knitting).
Georgia is a long state and the shawl progressed, although it's now hard to tell, without putting it all on a huge needle.
The Florida state sign which the shawl couldn't get close enough to to pose seductively.
Here it waves to my little brothers, rather limply.
Thanks for all the birthday wishes, the drawing will occur sometime today and the winner will be announced tomorrow!
