How to waste a perfectly good day off...

It all started with my desire to knit a shawl during my upcoming road trip. My birthday is this week, so I felt justified in buying some more KnitPicks Alpaca Cloud, just enough for the shawl. Well, I might have got a little wrapped up in trying to get to the Free Shipping Minimum ($40). The yarn I needed was, if I splurged, $10 +shipping...but somehow, spending $40 made a lot more sense. So I got to thinking about what I plan on making as Christmas gifts...and figured I might as well just buy it now, get free shipping on all of it, and then I'm ready to go, right? Huh.
I spent over an hour figuring it all out. I plan on making a log cabin blanket for my in-laws...and their decor colors are NOTHING like I'd pick, so I always have a hard time putting colors together for them. Photoshop to the rescue. I saved all the pictures of the colors to my computer, opened them up and cut and pasted like crazy. Here's what I came up with, using Knitpicks Wool of the Andes:
The first choice has black at it's center, because that's the main color in my Mother-in-Law's living room. Gold, green and red are accent colors. But then I got to thinking...she just painted her bedroom a reddish peach color. She calls it Terra Cotta and KnitPicks Shine comes in a Terra CottaBut then, that pinky terra cotta color doesn't seem dark enough...
How bout this? With red in the center and black on the outside?
Hmm..now that I look at it, perhaps I should get rid of that orangy color...the 2nd border?
Any opinions will be cherished and appreicated...I'll be making my purchase by this evening...but then again, I probably won't buy enough, so I can add in other yarns as I come across them...I'd hate making all the squares the same...too boring! So perhaps I make all three squares? any ideas?
Edited to Add: I've talked myself down...I'm not going to order all this yarn today...it can wait! I'll get the laceweight I need and order this later...but for my own future referance, these are the colors I need:
Coal, Pumpkin, Daffodil, Fern, Iron Ore, advocado, terra cotta
I'd still like to hear your opinions as this is a very long-term project!

I like the third choice best. I like all the colors you are using. Nice. Hope to see some pics soon.

Happy birthday!

I also like number 3, but you know if you wanted to go with how colors show in nature, you may want to consider going from dark colors in the center to lighter at the edge?

I like the top version the best. Good luck making your decision.

I like the first choice. But I think black is elegant looking...just my thoughts.

Black is the main colour theme for your in-laws living room? With gold, red and green accents? Yeah, I wouldn't choose those colours either. But my opinion - since opinions were asked for: Whatever you decide I'd suggest staying with one colour for all the base squares, and then go nuts with making all the different logs different colours. Oh wait, I'm already doing that... I actually really like the idea of a black center square though. The red is more "traditional" but black is a great unifier. Whatever you decide - have fun with it! It really is fun, time consuming and never ending - but fun for sure.
