socks and gloves and all things dpn

After spending quite a bit of time yesturday working on Jaywalker socks, I decided you just couldn't see the pattern clearly enough with this yarn.

See?
So I ripped it out! I flipped through my books and decided I'd follow Elizabeth Zimmerman's sock recipe and use a simple mock cable stitch.
It's not very clear in this picture, but I'm happier with it!

I'm not giving up on Jaywalker (I joined the KAL!), but I'll need to wait until I get some more sock yarn to dye.
Tonight I'm working out a pattern for fingerless gloves for my mom out of this self-dyed yarn.

For ideas I've been perusing the Peaceful Palms KAL (which I, of course, joined!) It's between the BroadStreet Mittens, which seem kind of plain or the Hurry Up Spring Armwarmers from SNB (apparantly these are hard to photograph, so I'll just tell you-they have a great leaf and vine cable) or a adaptation of these cabley lovelies.
OOo I know-we'll vote!

Make sure to leave a comment and explain your choices!
ETA: I guess I should tell you a bit about my mom, right? She loves (and wears constantly) everything I've made her, even the first, pitifully short scarf out of Lion Cotton! Last Christmas I made her short little fingerless gloves out of Homespun and Bernat Boa (hey, I was a new knitter!) that went from wrist to knuckles. Her only comment was that she'd like them longer and with a thumb tube....and that was after I begged her to comment. She's a young mom anyhow (19 yrs older than me, and I'm in my early 20s) --she likes fun and funky stuff. I usually tone down the yarn she picks out, because she thinks she'll be able to wear rainbow mult-patterned socks with everything! (she's the perfect person to knit for-neverending appreciation and no taste for the boring stuff!)

I would go with the Hurry Up Spring armwarmers. I've made two pairs, one for myself and one for a friend, and we both wear them all the time. I'm planning a pair for my mother as well. The pattern is fun and easy, but be sure to check the errata.

I vote for the mittens. Plain will show off your hand dyed yarn and there are more options for warmth on really cold days.

It depends on your mother. Me, I have been using storebought versions of the BroadStreet mittens for years and I completely swear by them. They offer the best combination of warm and usability.

I know my own mother would say the armwarmers are nice and never wear them, and she would wear the mittens, so that also factored in to my vote.

I think the Broad Street mittens will be the most serviceable and may also showcase the yarn the best. If you think it's too plain, you can add a pattern to the backs of the mittens and over the top.

I vote for the arm warmers! I love arm warmers, they are fast fun, look great and are very useful.
