change in name

So last night, when slightly sleepy and groggy, I was rethinking the blog name...yeah, it wasn't too clever, but I hadn't been able to come up with anything else. I 've had other online journals and had used up all my cleverness for those. So, after some tipsy thinking about my interests and passions (other than my DH: feminism, French lit, history, reading). One of my favorite (and one of the first) feminists is Simone de Beauvoir (it helps that she's French) and I love her book, La Deuxieme Sexe. It's all about how society has made womankind the 'second sex' in that we're the gender that has to prove ourselves. For example, if you're a woman and successful, you have to prove that your worth the success or that your still feminine. Anyhow, I can't do the idea justice on a Saturday morning.
The real reason for the title is this: I've always been interested in getting rid of the stigma of 'women's work'. Women in the past have avoided 'women's work' in order to seem equal to men; I think women (and men) should embrace the hobbies that they enjoy and for me that's crafty stuff like knitting and scrapbooking. I fell in love with the Stitch N Bitch books when I read Debbie Stollar's inroduction about 'taking back the knit'. I studied this idea long before knitting but I picked up knitting without ever thinking of the correlation. That introduciton really gelled it for me.
So "The Deuxieme Stitch", like the Deuxieme Sexe...because knitting has to always explain itself...people want to know 'why' (as if clothing myself or making thoughtful, unique gifts weren't enough), because I can knit and be a feminist, because knitting (and all my craftiness) is as much a part of my identity is my femininity, my ambition, and my intelligence.
